Your site is fantastic. I've learned a lot so far and have more to look through. I have a website that honors the Veterans of the US Navy during WWII that served on the USS SALT LAKE CITY CA25 Heavy Cruiser. Lots of History, Names of all the Veterans that served on the ship during WWII being added. Lots of contacts from Veterans &/or their family members. Pictures, stories...etc. Address is: http://www.greencis.net/~sandysq/vet_note.htm

What a great site! My dad was a Sea-Bee in WWII. He is no longer with us, he passed away 12 years ago of heart disease. I wish he could be here to see how technology has brought to life stories, letters, video and audio of the past (his past…) so he could see someone else's experience and relate to it. This site is all about a virtual community of people who have served their country so many years ago and are still connected by their past… even after 50 years. Kudos! Purr

Hello Rose. Had a great time in Normandy in June. I "finally" met Mr. Sidney Salomon, of the 2nd Ranger Battalion. His unit was the very first unit to recieve credit for getting to the top of the bluff, at the far-right of Omaha Beach on D-Day. "Unfortunately" with very high casualties. Please see the article: www.phillyburbs.com/intelligencerrecord/dday/dday1.shtml Thanks again Tim www.ww2dday.com

A Note From Rose

Rose Thanks for pointing this out, Al. Unbeknownst to us, we had a problem with one of the email addresses associated with the site. It has since been corrected thanks to your kind note. If anyone ever has problems contacting us, please sign the guestbook or email me at webgeezer@pranger.com.

We don't want to miss a single message.

This is a very nice site, I am very impressed. My grandpa was in World War 2, this site reminds me of all the stories he used to tell me. He passed away in 1992, but this site brings back all the good memories.

I really enjoy your website. It is educational, well written, and a joy to read. I am currently working on a similar project. My Uncles, William Wylie Galt and Luther Sidney Gustafson were both killed in WWII. Bill won the Medal of Honor and Sid won the Distinguished Service Cross. I recently came across their letters home from North Africa and Italy and am compiling and annotating them as a gift for my siblings and cousins, who never had the joy of knowing their Uncles. It has been a very long and rewarding project. It has become quite difficult to gather information on their personalities, as many of their fellow soldiers and friends and deceased or very old. Your website has encouraged me a great deal. Thank you, Erik R. Gustafson 691 Sollid Road Conrad, MT 59425

I am currently reading 'The Rise And Fall Of The Third Reich'. I am 32 years old and cannot even begin to thank all those of you who fought in WWII so that the world and me and my family in particular could live in peace. I fear my generation has almost totally forgotten why we fought, and I think we are now willing to follow our leader regardless of his character if the economy is strong. This is a parallel of how Hitler came to power back in those tumultuous times. Also I want to become a part of the effort to build a WWII Memorial. I heard an ad on the radio the other night but I have forgotten the phone #. Do you have any info on that effort? Sincerely, Matt Barnhart

I have enjoyed you site very much and I plan on returning often to "keep in touch" with Private Art. My grandparents were in Honolulu during Pearl Harbor. My grandfather was a surgeon in the army and stationed there. My grandmother was in their officer's housing two miles away and was able to see the bombing from her front door. She was seven months pregnant with my father. The women and children had to hide for days in the pineapple fields until they could be evacuated. My grandfather died in 1977 but my grandmother will turn 89 this October. My family took her back for her first visit about 15 years ago. It was a very emotional time and she recognized names and many of the stories. She has given talks on her Pearl Harbor experiences all over Texas and we have made a video of her presentation. It's amazing how the stories of the people who lived through the war can really bring it alive for those too young to have known it for themselves. The small details she and others can add really make it personal and close to home.

Dear Mrs. My name is Robert B Kelley and I am soon to be a history teacher here in Ohio. Do you happen to have a book put together with all of the letters? I would find this most use full. The problem with history is the students feel detached from it. These letters and stories would help me pull them into history and see that fine men, heroes, were real. Absolutely facinating, my father Ensign Angello Giordano was in the D-Day landings. He was sent home with some terrible wounds. He met this nice nurse at Great Lakes Naval Hospital who ended up being my Mom. I am now 48 years old and my Father and Mother are both in poor health, yet in all these years my father has refused to talk about his war experiences. I saw saving private Ryan if the realty was even close to that I can see why. My Mother though told me an interesting story that I did not want to get lost in history. When she was just finishing up her Nurses training, in Chicago, the bombing at Pearl Harbor occured. One of the other Nurses had a boy friend on the Arizona. She was informed the next day that he had been killed in the attack. Two weeks later she received a letter in the mail from him with an engagement ring asking her to marry him. Wow, what a sad story. Anyway, Cool site. Ed

Hello, I would like to commend you for your efforts in remembering the service men, who served in a most horrific war. My grandfather served in the Pacific theater and I only recently learned of his true duties during the war. My parents were trying to protect their only child from the horrors of what my grandfather was ordered to do during his time in the Marines. My interest in your website is not purely personal. I am a history and political science double major at Converse College in South Carolina. I am in the process of researching the affects of WWII on Converse and the home front, so I am confident that your website will be informative. John Anderson on Dec. 28, 1943...and from what I can make out it gives his address as HQ & HQ 83 Cml Btn., with an APO of 3939, NY and was written from somewhere in Italy... "we are living in large tents...about 10 men to a tent" ..."we are in a rest center near town" and he didn't know how long they would be there. On January 22, 1944 he was listed as MIA and in July, '44 it was confirmed he was KIA. I am trying to find anyone who mght have information on him. He was a medic and was from Tennessee. He was 23. The information I have is very scant save for this letter. Any help, or direction, if I am not reading this right would be greatly appreciated. Thanks to you, sir, and to all those who served!

To read your original letters from over 50 years ago brought such clear images to my mind, I almost feel as though I were watching a movie. I look forward to reading in more detail the story of Pvt. Art. The format and content are great! The story as seen through letters from the Home Front and the Front Lines give a good insight to the personal feelings of his loved ones and Pvt. Art. I have just help my Pop to publish the story of his WWII unit, 275th Armored Field Artillery Bn. They also were in the Battle of the Bulge. Their gun positions on 16 Dec 1944 were east of St. Vith, Belgium. We would welcome your visit to this new site. http://geocities.com/EnchantedForest/Creek/7185/index.htm

I am 22 years old and just got done viewing the movie Saving Private Ryan for the second time, and I am again over whelmed by the power of that movie. Years of learing about WWII in school does not even begin to put in our minds the sacrifices laid out by so many young men. I always respected veterans for their sacrifices to our country, but after seeing that movie, which i am sure is not close to the hell really went through, I will for the rest of my life, never let a day go by that I do not thank God for the men who fought for me to have the right to sit here freely and write to you. Thank you for your sacrifice.

Many memories of the worry each night, for a new, young bride, always praying and awaiting mail from overseas. So grateful for your sharing those letters, as it brings closer those memories since my husband is deceased for 10 yrs. He wrote a show in the service, which they performed in hospitals in Italy and also entertained on the island of Malta, playing for the baroness. Hi Folks.. Love your amazing and wonderful website! Just thought that you may be interested to know that the snapshot in the "Little Brown Book" labeled "Me in German Civvies" actually shows a German uniform with the insignia stripped off of it. The cut of the coat with the four flap pockets and the peculiar lapels reveal its military origin, as do the domed metal buttons.

Another interesting giveaway also can be seen in the close up of that same photo where you can see that military medals/decorations had been removed from the pleat of the upper left pocket....probably as souvenirs. There is also a little "scar" where a button securing the left shoulder epaulet had been removed.

All these missing items were prime souvenirs to be taken off of uniform coats...as were also the missing lapel insignia, if any. It is hard to tell from the B&W photo what branch of service the uniform was originally from.

Keep up the fine work, Cort Skinner

We just found your site today and have enjoyed an hour or so perusing it. We feel it is a most relevant recollection of one of the most perilous periods in our nation's history. Reading Private Art's letters, reminds one of the letters written by the heroes that served in WW I and the Civil War. It is important to save the contemporary accounts of WW II. Each of the men who participated as "unsung heroes" also bring such a human interest glimpse of Americana "l940's Style". This group of heroes is fast fading from our midst and it is imperative that we honor them and glean insight into their lives as young men whose youth was short-lived because they served their country so well. Thank You for Privat Art

In addition to our letters and momentoes of our own family, we have received memories that others want to share with our audience. We also plan to add images of our original letters so you can see what they looked like, too. They often tell stories that the written words simply cannot capture.

I'm just getting started reading the page. So far, it's great. Your so talented, and Art deserves a great big "Thanks" for his contribution to our country.

I was in the 260th Combat Engineers that originated in Camp Swift, TX. I am 81 yrs. old. Is there anyone out there that was in my company? I was supposed to get on the ship crossing the channel from South Hampton, England but since it was full we had to get on another ship that crossed France.

I love your site!! I just recently found a diary that my Dad had kept during part of his time in the navy. The diary starts in October, 1944 and goes to March, 1945. I am not finished with it yet, I am trying to make it last. If you are interested in any exerpts I will gladly forward them to you. Thanks for the great site! -chris

The words "hero" and "courage" seem to have lost their meaning in today's society; they get used alot these days about the most inconsequential things (e.g. baseball players are not "courageous" for playing with a sprained finger, and they aren't "heroes" for winning the Penant). The men who fought in WWII demonstrated what it truely means to have courage; they define what heroes are! I really can't put into words all the feelings of gratitude I have. However, I would like to say "Thank You" to Art and all WWII vets - thank you for your sacrifice; thank you for all you did for us (even those of us not yet born). It is appreciated, more than you probably realize.

I have jusr started to explore your web site, but my first thoughts were of my late Father( ROY N RITTER ) who was in the WW ll Conflict, he really never talked much about it to us kids, but I do I do know he thought about it and some of his buddies that where lost in it.

My family are from Covington. My Uncle Len Schwarte served in the Pacific during WW2 bringing back a case of malaria. My father was drafted to his job at Powell valve. He found out much later that Powell was making components for the Manhatten Project.Happy Birthday!
