My WWII hero is Hubert Moseley. I never did know him, but my teacher is his daughter. He was a pilot of a B17 called the Flying Fortress. He was shot down by the Germans and was taken in as a prisoner of war for 18 months. Even though I didn't know him he is still my hero because he risked his life to keep our country free.

I am 22yrs old and do not have a WWII hero but would like to say that I think the men and women who fought for our country in WWII will forever be my heros. I think this website is a wonderful way for my generation to be able to get a true glimpse of WWII. Thank you to all the heros who helped give us what we have today.

I just purchased my grandmother's house, and in cleaning out the attic I found over 200 letter to and from my grandmother and my grandfather who was over in Holland during WWII. The dates range from 1943-1946. I haven't had a chance to read the letters yet, as I want to find a significant amount of time to sit and read. I have put them in chronological order from earliest to latest by the postmark on each envelope. I haven't told my mother or uncles yet, because these letters are in immaculate condition and I want to keep the collection in tact. I am hoping to put copies of these letters and photos into scrapbooks to give to each of them. Does anyone have any suggestions about how to go about this? Scanners, letter preservation, etc? This site is wonderful!

I'm so glad I found this site (heard about it in Yahoo Internet Life). The pictures & writings remind me of the stories my Uncle Frank (my dad's brother) told about his days in the Army. He also took lots of pictures (I still am amazed that the fellas were able to do that) and they are now cherished as a memorial to a man whose life seemed to be marked by a war. Before he died (1997) we video-taped him telling the story of his travels & explaining a lot of the pictures. Thanks for sharing. Genny Gallup-Pittsburg KS

I wasn't born till 1952 but I feel that there is a bond between me and those who gave so much during WWII, willingly or not. I'm moved each time I think about those rows of white head stones, crosses, stars of David and others and I can't help remembering the words from "In search of Private Ryan" ... "deserve it". I strive each day to deserve this extraordinary gift those men and women gave me. I often fall short, but they always seem to be there telling me to get up and try again ... hope and belief.

I am amazed at the number of people who are looking for information regarding loved ones. I hope they are able to recover the lost info via your site or others reading it. Hi Rose, Yesterday's pop up was about a visit to a War Cemetry in Normandy. I recently adopted a war grave at the American Cemetery in Margraten, The Netherlands, and I'm trying to find out about that soldier (and I'm getting great help from the 29th Infantry's Veterans). Furthermore, your site and all letters radiate an "Ernie Pyle-like quality". I did read his books in Dutch translation as a two year old kid (in 1951, the torn pages are still proof of that), later I got me the original American books, and often reread them. Best wishes for you and Pvt. Art

I loved reading Pvt. Art's letters. I am in the process of making a scrapbook that tells the story of my parents dating days (1941), marriage (1942), Dad's Induction (1/1943), the birth of my brother (10/1943), his service in the CBI Theatre as an Army Medic, and his discharge (12/25/1945). A lot of the information I have to complete my project was found on the backs of photographs Mom and Dad sent to each other. There are many love letters and drawings my dad drew. He drew pictures of sexy women on the barrack walls similar to what you see on the WWII plane nose art. Thankfully, he sent home pictures of the drawings. Again, I thank you so much for putting together such a wonderful history of your husband, and of the war. Sincerely, Sheila Grey

Miss Rose, I finally got a copy of my Dad's Hon.Discharge from the NPRC, and it says he belonged to Company B, 82nd Chemical Mortar Company (doesn't say Battalion). I wonder if they MEANT battalion, or is it possible that there were Companies with numerical designations. I kind of doubt it, but my understanding of Army unit-identification is limited. My father died two years ago, I never really knew him, as his WWII experience as a prisoner of war caused him great mental distress, he escaped the German Prison Camp he was in eventually and returned to american troups in a german uniform given to him by a prison guard that befriended him, as he spoke German, my grandparents lived in GA, but were German. He was very young in that war, returned married my mother and ended up in a VA Hospital for the rest of his life. He gave his all, not in dying in that war, but in losing his mind for our country. I just came across this guest book while doing some personal research on the web. My grandfather was a prisoner of war. He was a paratrooper who was captured and kept in a sweat box? A fellow near him had a father as a doctor and informed my grandfather that he had all the symptoms of malaria, so my grandfather faked malaria and was sent to a german controled hospital. After time he escaped the hospital and later in the evening snuck back in to retrieve his records hoping that no one would notice him missing. After catching up with allies days later, he was almost shot when trying to convince them that he was an american for he is very much italian blooded and looked that way also. His name was Guido Cellitto. He passed away under 2 years ago and unfortunately I do not have all of the information on his time in the war. If anyone remembers him at all I would love to hear from you. Or if anyone knows where I could find any information on him by searching any notable archives, etc... I would be very interested. Thanks so much.

Love the website! I grew up in The Netherlands and, of course, heard many stories about "The War" from my parents, other family members and Dutch media. My home town, Nijmegen, was itself in the midst of it - operation Market-Garden - and I visited various battlefields in France and Belgium (my father's idea of family vacation). Thus, The War has always been very much alive for me and reading "Private Art"'s letters added another wonderful dimension to it. Thanks!

If anyone knows how I can get a copy of my husband's records from Ft. Benjamin Harrison, In., or St. Louis, Missouri, please e-mail me. My husband is Vernon Black, a decreased VietNam Veteran. I would like to be able to show our kids and grandkids what my husband was in the Army. Our kids were very young when he passed away at Ft. Sill, OK at Reynolds Army Hospital. And the grandkids only know what I can rerember. As a matter of fact, our youngest son doesn't rerember his Dad atall. Any information at all, would be a big help to myself and family. I'm just a widow that wants to keep her husband alive for the family and herself. Thanks to anyone that might be able to send any information atall. Willene M. Black, Pineville, KY

I came upon your web site by accident and found myself 2.5 hours later finishing the last email comment. I wasnt' sure what the web site was at first but came upon it while looking for WWII war babies left by American soldiers. My Father has always been my hero and my friend. I am a baby boomer child of the fifties. I have heard many, many stories of Dads experiences on board the USS Boise and the USS Princeton (I beleive they were aircraft carriers), as well as the ports they had shore leave on. One nightmare that reoccured frequently was when the USS Boise was hit by a torpedo. The captian ordered the doors be shut with men still inside before the ship sank. Dads friends were locked inside, screaming to be let out. He relived that nightmare over and over again. He had a fiend blown up right next to him during a battle. Japanese kimokoses planes trying to crash into the ship, one actually made it. My Dad is Charles W Grubham from Grand Haven, Mich. Dad passed away in 2000. He talked alot about the battles in his later years. He left school at 17.yrs old to enlist in the Navy. He returned six years later. My Grandmother kept his letters he sent home. He was very proud to have served his country and was proud of it until the day he died. He instilled his patriotism in all of his children. Dad has many black and white photos while onboard, even during a battle. He saved scrapnal from a Japanese plan that crashed onto the deck. I hope and pray that no one ever forgets the freedom we have and all that have died for that freedom. I know I won't.

My father, James E. Parcels, was an army Sergeant in WWII. I'm hoping to find some information about him of anyone who had served with him. I don't have much background of where he served but it would be great to hear from others who served with him and knew him.

I have been very interested in Private Art's recollections. My Dad was in Company D. I know he left Camp Swift on April 11, 1944 and was in New York around April 17th, 1944. After that I have no clues until June 7th, 1944. Would you know if company A and company D followed similar paths? Do you think they both were part of the D-Day Invasion? Would like to hear from you. Thanks for such an informative web sight! Marsha

As an American Army combat veteran during World War II I must respond to the posting of June 28 by Madis Roost of Kohila, Estonia. I try not to hate anyone personally as I individual. Having fought against the Germans through the Siegfried Line, in the Belgian Ardennes, and across the Roer, Rhine, and Weser rivers to the Elbe I also respect the German Army, except for some super-arrogant units of the Waffen SS who were sometimes brutal beyond military necessary. In many respects the German Army was a great army. They did what they were called upon to do and, with some exceptions, abided by the rules of war on the battlefield. That said, the Nazis regime under Adolph Hitler is another matter. If “hate” means to abhor with repugnance and disgust then I admit to a deep hatred of the Nazism of 1930s Germany and all it stood for. Any American soldier who participated in the liberation of Nazi concentration camps and saw the results of the deliberate inhumanity there cannot feel otherwise. There is no question in my mind but that the war against Nazism was justified, even moral. Forty-two of my company colleagues gave up their lives to defeat it and bring Germany back into the family or respectable nations which its history and culture deserves. About two hundred more were wounded or missing in action. Their sacrifices have not been in vain. I sympathize with any country under unwanted foreign occupation and am glad to see Estonia free and independent. After seeing, "Saving Private Ryan" it brought everything into perspective, how much we have to thank our veterans for......there was no easy job there. Everyone who landed on Utah and Omaha Beaches have plenty to recall, if they made it. That was one heck of a slaughter of our men....I applaud all war heros! Thank you, all. i know you lost a lot of your buddies, brothers, and fathers.

This is a wonderful site! The letters are so sweet and touching and their story is incredible. I found you while searching for ideas of what to do with a box of WWII letters saved by my great-grandmother. You've really inspired me (although I won't be able to pull off anything this well done!). Thank you! Katherine
