Pvt. Art grows ever-impatient waiting for his much needed supplies. In the meantime, the following three-part letter from the family was in the mail. The children often took turns writing for their mother because of her poor penmanship. In this instance, Sis wrote Mom's portion of the letter.

Hy Art,
(or should I say Private Pranger),

Sunday I went to the show (or flop) and saw it at the FAMILY on Main Street) a double feature, "The Leopard Man", and "Get Going". "The Leopard Man" was the best. Well in this picture a leopard escapes from somewhere and killed 3 girls but in the end, the man who kept the leopard said he was a good leopard and he won't hurt nobody. Well anyhow in the end it's a man who kills those 3 girls and the real leopard was in the country and someone shot him. Well that's all for now.

P.S. (In case you don't know it the clock is being set back again Sunday...and don't forget to send me something for a souvenir from Texas)

Dear Art,

I read the letters you send and it seems as if their trying to work you to death, you could have drank some of those soft drinks and it would have been lighter to carry. But I guess this is junk to you. Back home here nothing much popping around here except it's still rather chilly and we could use some of that 130 degree up here. Dad came home Friday and we told him that you left and he said - so soon and I sure have plenty of homework to do, I got typing and I guess I'm doing pretty good. We got your letter today Sept. 20 and were writing this the same day. The furnace pipe arrived Sunday and I guess will get it up yet. Just whereabouts in Texas are you. Well that's about all there is so long,

Your loving brother,

Ralph

Dear Mom,

How about writing to me? I sent two letters already & I need that shoeshine kit and soap. I don't know how long it takes my letters to reach you but I hope you'll answer as soon as possible.

Well, today was my first full day here. We marched with rifles and learned how to operate a mortar. We also learned how to run for cover from airplanes and shoot at them. We also had plane silhouettes to tell different planes apart from other ones. We also had map reading with instruments and other things but we didn't actually see them, use them - we watched while the sergeant showed us how.

Tomorrow we go through the gas chamber. We were shown the different gas bombs today and one of them melted a regular iron sewer pipe. You could actually see it melting and they burn and look like a Fourth of July sparkler only it's got a lot of powder in it. There's another bomb that looks like green water with black mud at the bottom. This one was in a bottle and when it was broken it started on fire and stuck to everything it hit on. Then they lit two smoke bombs and we walked through it. Boy! You can't see anything but it don't hurt you. Well, that's about all for now, but please write,

Pvt. Art
